What happens when one small spark of creativity lights up an entire town?
In The Behavior of Light, award-winning playwright Douglas Carter Beane brings us a funny, heartwarming story about art, hope, and finding your shine — even when the world feels a little dim.
Set in small-town Pennsylvania, the play follows Barry, a teenage artist who uses light — not paint — to make his art. While the people around him might not always understand his big ideas, Barry’s imagination and kindness begin to change how everyone sees the world, one glowing moment at a time.
Full of humor, heart, and a touch of magic, The Behavior of Light reminds us that creativity can connect us all — and that sometimes, being different is the brightest thing you can be.
SYNOPSIS
In a small Pennsylvania town in the 1970s, Barry is a young man with a big imagination. While other kids play sports or hang out at the mall, Barry spends his time creating glowing art installations that light up backyards, barns, and even the night sky.
When his work starts to draw attention — both good and bad — Barry finds himself at a crossroads. Can he stay true to his art and still fit in with everyone else? With the support of his friends and family, Barry learns that following the light inside you can change more than just your own path — it can brighten an entire community.
Filled with laughter, family moments, and heartfelt discoveries, The Behavior of Light is a story about finding beauty in unexpected places and believing that your spark matters.
